Every two years, the Olympic Games remind us what the human body is capable of. Athletes from around the world spend years preparing for a single moment of competition, pushing their bodies to the absolute limit.
What many people don’t realize is that chiropractors are part of the medical teams helping Olympic athletes perform at their best.
For decades, chiropractors have worked alongside physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other healthcare providers to help elite athletes stay healthy, recover quickly, and compete at the highest level.
And here’s something even fewer people realize:
Only chiropractors with advanced sports training are eligible to work with Team USA.
The History of Chiropractors at the Olympic Games
The relationship between chiropractic care and Olympic athletics began nearly 50 years ago.
Chiropractic care has become a trusted part of sports medicine at the highest levels of competition. Chiropractors now regularly work with Olympic athletes and national teams, helping them manage injuries, improve recovery, and maintain peak physical performance.
Today, chiropractors are a common part of multidisciplinary sports medicine teams, working alongside other healthcare professionals to support elite athletes before, during, and after competition.
The Training Required to Work With Olympic Athletes
Not every chiropractor is qualified to work with elite athletes.
Sports chiropractors who work with Team USA must hold the credential Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP). This is the highest level of certification in sports chiropractic.
Earning this certification requires:
Four years of advanced postgraduate training
National board examinations
Extensive clinical experience treating sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions
In the fall of 2025, I earned this certification, becoming one of only a small number of chiropractors in the state of Michigan to hold the DACBSP designation.
What Sports Chiropractic Actually Means
Sports chiropractic is not just about treating injuries after they happen.
It focuses on helping people move better, recover faster, and stay active longer.
Care typically includes:
Hands-on treatment for joint, muscle, and nerve problems
Soft tissue therapy and mobility work
Exercise rehabilitation and strength programming
Movement analysis and injury prevention strategies
This approach helps athletes—and active individuals of all kinds—maintain healthy movement and return safely to the activities they enjoy.
You Don’t Have to Be an Olympian to Benefit
While Olympic athletes rely on sports chiropractors to help them perform at the highest level, this type of care isn’t just for elite competitors.
In fact, the same principles apply to anyone with physical demands in their life.
Whether you are:
Training at the gym
Playing recreational sports
Working a physically demanding job
Trying to stay active as you get older
Keeping up with kids or grandkids
Your body still benefits from movement-based care that addresses the root cause of pain and dysfunction.
